We all know that our attachment injuries and unresolved emotional pain can flair up during the holiday season.

Many of my clients have told me that they wish to “avoid” family this year and just be by themselves or with friends so they don’t have to deal with the inevitable “unresolved tribal wounds”.

One of my favorite tools is to practice being the “neutral observer” of our triggers. I want to share a clip from my EMOTIONAL REHAB course with you, because it is perfect for this time of year.

When we heal our emotional triggers, we stop abandoning ourselves and we begin to reclaim the truth of who we are. How great would it feel to show up to your family’s gathering or any gathering for that matter. You feel unapologetic about who you are, how you feel and what you say, because you have so deeply owned it within you. You have self validated and healed the inner child’s misinterpretations of SELF.

When we have attachment trauma, we often feel the need to be connected to a significant other (in order to regulate our own emotions). This feels as important as the air we breathe and the food we eat. It is a BASIC NEED to be securely attached.

When we have unresolved issues with those closest to us, we can instantly be brought BACK into the “original wound”. We feel like we are going backwards. This is not the case UNLESS we allow the pain from our past to reconfirm the STORY we originally adopted about WHY this happened in our world. We get to reframe this EVERY TIME it comes up. Every time it comes forward, we have the opportunity to SEE IT DIFFERENTLY.

TRY THIS: Whenever you get triggered. Notice where it is in your body. Thank it for showing up. “How we relate to the issue is the issue.” Remind yourself this is OLD STUCK PAIN. Become present by focusing on your breath. Then ask yourself if THIS TIME you can see it differently. Ask for facts to support the feeling. When facts do not show up, ask yourself if you are willing to accept a different TRUTH. You get to UPGRADE old misunderstandings at any time. Give yourself this permission to elevate this holiday season.
